Battlefields Challenge - Gaffie Schultz

Gaffie & Aretha Schultz completed the Battlefields Challenge between 27th Nov 2011 and 8th January 2012 - starting and finishing in Pretoria, Gauteng.

Gaffie tells the story:

Honoured Dead Memorial – Kimberley (27 November 2011)

We started our tour on the morning of 27 November, heading towards Kimberley via Potch and Klerksdorp. We reached the Honoured Dead Memorial in Kimberley, at about noon on 27 November. We spend the night just outside Bloemfontein at Reineke park.

Boer War Museum & Vrouemonument – Bloemfontein (28 November 2011)

The next morning (Saturday), we entered Bloemfontein and went to the Boer War Museum. We were not allowed to bring the bike close to the memorials because all the sprayers on the lawns (and some paved areas too!) were on. We parked in the parking area behind the statue Die Afskeid - as per photograph below.

We spend some time inside, learning the history of all the Boer generals. We then posed for another photo in front of the Vrouemonument.

Boer War Museum – Mafikeng (17 December 2011)

After touring through the Eastern Province, Western Cape, Karoo and North-West Province, we ended up in Mafikeng. We went to the museum straight away for our photo. As was the case in Bloemfontein, this museum also keeps a lot of interesting history on display.

Fort Schanskop – Pretoria (28 December 2011)

The next day, we headed home to Pretoria. On our way there, we stopped at Fort Schanskop on the Voortrekker Monument grounds.

Long Tom cannon – Long Tom pass/Lydenburg (5 January 2012) After having enjoyed a peaceful Christmas and New Year's Day with family, we were back on our trusty V-Strom to complete the challenge. We reached Lydenburg and the Long Tom Cannon on 5 January.

Talana Museum – Dundee (6 January 2012)

Our final point for the Battlefields Challenge was the Talana Museum just outside Dundee.

On our way to the north coast of KZN, we visited Talana on 6 January.

Thanks to André Badenhorst who initiated this very educational challenge.
